We thought we would write this weeks blog in celebration of the incredibly rare and original 2016 Rolex Daytona Rainbow 116598RBOW which is available in store now. This stunning watch was only made in tiny numbers due to the difficulty Rolex had in matching the stones. This timepiece not only shines, but it is also a technical achievement for Rolex. Let’s have a look at why this colourful model is particularly sought after.
The main feature of this stunning Rolex is the unique, colourful bezel. The 18k yellow gold Daytona has 36 square-cut sapphires forming a rainbow pattern of reds, oranges, yellows, greens, blues, purples and pinks. A brightly coloured wristwatch won’t suit everyone, but if you are looking for something special, this is it!
Whilst many people may see this Daytona as a bit go a novelty, there is not denying it is a work of art! From finding of the right stones and colours to get the correct rainbow around the bezel, to making sure they are all uniform in quality. The 36 sapphires on the bezel are not alone in making sure this watch is glitzy enough. An additional 36 diamonds were added into the horns and the crown-protection, and 8 diamonds are applied on the dial… wow! Rolex did discontinue this model due to the difficulty of obtaining the right gemstones for the bezel, and we unfortunately are not surprised.
The Cosmograph Daytona itself was first introduced in 1963, and was designed to meet the demands of professional racing drivers. It has a highly reliable chronograph and bezel with tachymetric scale, which allows drivers to perfectly measure average speeds up to 400 kilometres or miles per hour. The latest Rolex Daytona’s introduced this year are simply stunning and a little more toned down than the rainbow model! The 116518LN 40mm yellow gold has a gorgeous champagne coloured dial, which in contrast with the black Oysterflex bracelet is perfect. This latest model is a blend of high technology and sleek aesthetics, and pays tribute to the heritage of this legendary chronograph. The black bezel is also reminiscent of the 1965 model that was fitted with a black Plexiglas bezel insert.
Whether you like the classic gold and black or would like to add a splash of colour this summer, there are plenty of options with Rolex Daytona. However the number of Rolex Daytona Rainbow watches that have been sold is quite small. These models are gaining in value rapidly and purchasing one now is an investment!
