It’s that time of the year in the city of Basel, Switzerland, where Baselworld showcases what is new from the leading watch and jewellery brands. Last year the event attracted more than 145,000 people from over 100 countries. The 2017 event has opened today, and will feature around 300 brands from luxury watch makers like Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Omega. Let’s start by taking a look at what has been showcased by Rolex so far.
Rolex Sea-Dweller 50th Anniversary
Rolex celebrates the 50th anniversary of its iconic Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller with a new, larger 43mm-diameter case. The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller was created as a professional divers’ watches 50 years ago in 1967. The new calibre 3235 movement, is at the forefront of watchmaking technology. The dial bears the name Sea-Dweller in red, which is a reference to the first model. The new model also has a Cyclops lens on the crystal at 3 o’clock, which is a rare addition for the Sea-Dweller.
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona
Rolex has added new versions to the Cosmograph Daytona, and there are three variations: 18-carat yellow, white or Everose gold. The combination of the new Oysterflex strap and black courtroom, ceramic bezel gives the watch a luxurious, sporty feel. We just loved the 18 ct yellow gold version as it just looks super sleek. It pays tribute to the heritage of this legendary watch, with the beautiful black bezel paying homage to the 1965 model.
A new edition to the Cellini collection is the Cellini Moonphase, which features a moonphase display. The 39mm diameter case is rendered in 18-carat Everose gold with a folding crownclasp also in 18-carat Everose gold. The stunning leather strap gives it a classic, vintage feel and the white lacquer dial with blue enamelled disc at 6 o’clock looks very striking! The disc shows the full moon and the new moon, the former depicted by a meteorite applique and the latter by a silver ring. As each night goes by, the moonphase disc follows the lunar cycle, which we think is a great addition to any watch! Not only does it have interesting technology, this watch will look perfectly stylish on the wrist.
A very colourful Rolex Yacht-Master 40
Although this is not a new model, the Yacht-Master 40 certainly has been jazzed up with this multicoloured gem bezel. The Yacht-Master has been a consistent part of the Oyster Perpetual collection since 1992 and we have seen several versions in various sizes, but nothing like this. It may slightly resemble the game ‘Candy Crush’ (which may not be for everyone), but it is beautifully set with 32 sapphires, eight tsavorites, and one diamond at the top as a pointer. It is still sporty and is the same watch we know and love, but we do like the fun and playfulness of this updated version!
It is only day one at Baswelworld and there are definitely going to be more amazing releases to discuss for many different watch brands. We haven’t even mentioned the good news for people who love the Rolex Sky-Dweller. A new version has been introduced for the first time in yellow Rolesor, which is a combination of steel with 18-carat white gold bezel versions. These two-tone models represent a slightly cheaper option of the Sky-Dweller.
We are excited at Armour Winston to see what else there is to come at Baselworld 2017.
