New Audemars Piguet - wow!

Audemars Piguet Automatic Watch

In our last post we talked about what we might expect from SIHH 2016. Well there has been some truly stunning watches on show. However we thought we would focus on Audemars Piguet, simply because they had the wow factor!

Let’s start with the yellow gold Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar ref 26574BA.OO.1220BA.01 -

Audemars Piguet has gone for horological luxury — releasing a new version of its Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar. It is very classically designed and many luxury watch fans had thought yellow gold was “out of fashion”. However of course Audemars Piguet has a ethos: “to break the rules, you must first master them”.

Similar to most recent models of the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar, in steel and rose gold, this watch has a 41-mm case in the classical octagonal style of the Royal Oak collection. The deep blue dial is striking and the hour markers are in yellow gold like the case, with the hands treated with luminous coating. Powered by the Audemars Piguet calibre 2385, this three-counter chronograph energises the original Gerald Genta design from the early 70s.

It certainly is a watch of great beauty!

We also were excited by the vibrant and striking Royal Oak Offshore Diver Chronograph 26703ST at SIHH 2016. There is an extremely wide range of Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, and you can easily find the right one to suit different occasions. You can stick with classical, but can also go for a sportier type. The Offshore collection includes recently updated Chronographs and the Diver edition.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver Chronograph has the technology featured on the Diver, as well as a chronograph and cool colours! There is blue, green, yellow and orange -

Blue ref. 26703ST.OO.A027CA.01 has yellow markers on the diving bezel, white markings and indexes and a blue rubber strap.

Green ref. 26703ST.OO.A038CA.01 has a green dial, black sub-dials and blackened hands.

Yellow ref. 26703ST.OO.A051CA.01 has a bright, yellow dial, black inner bezel with yellow markers.

Orange ref. 26703ST.OO.A070CA.01 comes with a black inner  bezel with orange markers, white markings and indexes, on orange rubber strap.

If you are not so keen on bright colours, let me try and sway you. This watch is a bit more than just colours!  It is the first time that Audemars Piguet has combined the two concepts of the chronograph and the diver. It was six years ago that Audemars Piguet released their very first ISO certified diver’s watch, the Royal Oak Offshore Diver. This new release features the automatic caliber 3124/3841 fitted to the 42 mm stainless-steel case that can dive up to 300 meters.

Finally, we also love the new Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Tourbillon Extra-Thin Openworked ref. 15407OR.OO.1220OR.01. Now In Yellow Gold. Back at SIHH 2012, Audemars Piguet released the Royal Oak Tourbillon Extra-Thin Openworked in platinum. This watch was an instant hit and high-end watch enthusiasts loved it.

The updated version has an 18-carat pink gold case, glare-proofed sapphire crystal and caseback, screw-locked crown, and water-resistant to 50m. The dial is just exquisite in slate grey, with pink gold applied hour-markers and Royal Oak hands with luminescent coating.

Audemars Piguet is known for their openworked watches and the great amount of craftsmanship that goes into each piece. Their first skeletonised was created around 1921 and the first skeletonised Royal Oak was made in 1986 (1993 for the first skeletonized women’s Royal Oak). The new patented geometry involves a very complex manufacturing procedure, but the payoff is huge: with greatly improved precision and stability. Similar to the original Extra-Thin Tourbillon Openworked, this movement has over 100 polished angles, everything is hand-finished, and it features a 70-hour power reserve. A truly stunning watch!

At SIHH 2016, Audemars Piguet has continued their different thinking which is highlighted in a series of designs that break the rules of horological tradition - well done AP!
