In the 1960's, an industrial deep-sea diving company approached Rolex requesting a dive watch that could function deeper under water for a longer period of time.  Rolex took the Submariner 5513 model and added a one-way escape valve to relieve pressure. The Rolex Double Red Sea Dweller was produced for approximately 10 yrs from 1967 to 1977, and is an extremely popular collectors watch. We have one in the shop now, so let’s take a closer look at this stunning timepiece.

The Rolex Double Red Sea Dweller has become particularly iconic in the watch world. This vintage looking watch isn’t that difficult to find, however it can be more tricky to buy one in perfect condition. This is probably due to the fact it is a great timepiece to where everyday. The two lines of red makes the dial stand out and it is particularly durable! It doesn't matter if you are a diver or not,  the allure of the vintage looking domed crystal makes it a 'must have' for any vintage watch collector.

In the 1970s this watch sold for a lot more than than the red submariner. In the early 2000’s, there was more knowledge from collectors about the watch and it became even more popular! This is an original technical watch from Rolex, with larger dimensions and the writing on the case back (particularly sought after). Today Rolex has developed Deep Sea watches which are still particularly desirable for underwater explorers. The new Sea-Dweller has a dial which bears the name Sea-Dweller in red, is a reference to the first model.

Sea Dweller 2017

The latest Rolex Sea Dweller ref. 126600 is waterproof to 1,220 metres / 4,000 feet. It is a larger 43mm size and has the Cyclops over the date (unlike previous models). Being a 43mm diameter meant the caliber 3235 has a larger barrel compared to the previous 3135 version. This alteration enables a 70 hour power reserve. It certainly is a stunning watch, however the history of the Double Red Sea-Dweller shows an important part of Rolex heritage.
